Composition and Manipulation

With Composition and Manipulation I found it really interesting how photographer's adjust their pictures a certain way to grab the attention of viewers. I never realized how the golden proportion grabs the attention of so many people by just moving the center of the picture to a specific corner. That gives the picture a different point of view.  Another point that was interesting is how Connotation and Denotation changes the meaning of a picture. It changes a perspective with a simple crop, or zoom. The picture taken in Haiti had a sense of Connotation and Denotation, by adding to the dead civilian people walking in the back ground, ignoring her. Also by making the picture inclined, that made the picture look like it was in danger. That gave the picture look like a sense of a cliff or an edge, that gave it a sense of danger. In general manipulating pictures to make a message more dramatic, or to change a meaning of it fascinated me.

  1. I'm glad to hear that it was fascinating, I agree! Sounds like the presentation opened up some conceptual doors for you. In future posts, try to engage a few more examples from the material to solidify and support your opinions. It's true, the controversy that we discussed over the ethics of photojournalism—the tension between being respectful, while also constructing (as image-making is always a construction) a visually dynamic image—is so complicated, and permeates so many creative mediums and applications. Digging into these resources will help us weigh out the pros and cons, and find our own creative voice in the process.
