Grimaldy R. Roldan
This commercial
is a gum commercial by EXTRA. In this commercial a couple that had met in high
school, and the girl had shared a piece of gum to the boy. Then the gum
exchange was shared in dates and special occasions like prom. Towards the end
of the video the boy is now an adult and had made cartoons on the gum wraps remembering
her of those special occasions she had with him. This commercial is aimed towards
a wide range of consumers from 14-year-old young boys and girls and middle
adults as well. For these teenagers to want a nice relationship, and for adults
that miss their high school crushes. Also, it can intrigue older couple that
had a similar relationship when younger. The producer helps intrigue the
audience on the gum when the boy and girl share the gum on every occasion. The
gum needed to be exchanged for every event to occur. This makes the audience
want to buy the gum for events to occur in their lives well at least that’s what
the commercial aims for. Another thing it aims for its that the gum will always
be presented even when time passes. In this situation the man had made wraps
with the gum, this shows the audience that the gum as a whole product was necessary
in their lives. A great strategy that was used in the commercial was how the
camera focused on the smiles of the boy and the girl. Nice white teeth and a
real joyful emotion. This would give the consumer a belief that if they buy the
product their breath will smell good, and their smiles would look great as well.
This was a perfect video to grab consumers of different age groups, and in
different relationships.
What might help to structure your analysis, especially when you re-edit the ad into your own video, is to identify the clearest and most prevalent themes throughout the ad's narrative. Is the narrative playing upon our sense of nostalgia so that when we see Extra by the register we have a sudden emotional draw? Is the narrative focusing on time passage to remind the consumer that it is a reliable product? This analysis might get us closer to intended target because, I would image, nostalgia works more on consumers who are looking back into the past rather then forward into the future. Not sure if this is true, but if the ad is playing upon our sense of nostalgia, it might be targeted toward a socio-economic demographic that has a similar basic life story. Great point about the smiles, and would be interesting shots to freeze on and discuss—while the product is gum, it's still somehow good for your teeth? Lots to play with here.
