Final Project Statement - GM

For my final project, I am making a supercut of some of my favorite moments involving the YouTube channel OffCanny.(https://www.youtube.com/c/OFFCANNY) My resources are mostly just mp4's of their videos, which I'm editing down from about 10 minutes each to about 35-70 seconds. After I've cut down all the source videos, I am going to stitch them together in the order I think they belong in. I am also planning on using some sort of music in the background, both to tie the mood of the supercut together, and to cover up clips where the audio is borderline unusable. My goal is to make the theme very intense and fast paced, while also having a lot of humor involved. I plan to not only upload my final result here, but also on some OffCanny fan forums.

  1. Consider the degree of cultural critique and commentary that you are engaging in, as opposed to just fandom. If you start from the position of a fan, but push yourself to make your commentary relevant to a wider audience that might not be familiar with the particular content, your final piece will be much stronger and more relevant. What are the consequences and significances of mashing up existing content into something new? Do new repetitions or rhythms emerge in the content through your recontextualization? What might slowing the pace way down, rather than speeding it up, reveal about the formula the original content uses? Getting a bit more critical and analytical in your response to the material will make for a better message, as well as apply more cohesively to the overall themes of the class. Looking forward to seeing where you are with in on Thursday.
